Deduction/Contribution Cycles

What is a cycle?

Deduction/Contribution Cycles are designed to allow you to select which employee deductions and/or employer contributions you want to be applied to any particular pay period. You can use up to five cycles if you wish. The number of cycles you'll set up for your payroll will vary depending on how often you pay your employees during the month and whether or not you want to take different deductions and/or contributions at different times.

If You Pay...
Then You Could Use...
monthly
Cycle 1
semi-monthly
Cycles 1 and 2
biweekly
Cycles 1, 2, and 3
weekly
Cycles 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5

Whenever you check off a box listed below one of the five cycles, that deduction and/or contribution will be applied when that particular pay cycle is selected on creation of a new regular run.

If you always want to apply the same deductions and/or contributions every pay period, then you only need to set up one cycle. If you need to apply certain deductions and/or contributions on, say, the first pay of every month and a different combination on the next pay, then you could set up two cycles.

Why do I have to do this?

You must complete this step if your payroll has deductions and/or employer contributions in addition to statutory deductions (i.e. CPP, Employment Insurance, and Tax). If your payroll only has statutory deductions, use the Back button in the blue navigation bar at the top of this screen to return to our discussion of Pay Periods.
