Your questions, answered

Why should I use Powerpay to run my payroll?

Powerpay has been exclusively supporting Canadian small and medium-sized businesses for 25 years. Trusted by over 46,000 businesses to pay their 1.1 million employees, our payroll technology delivers unmatched reliability, security, and service excellence. With industry-leading privacy protections and compliance standards, we go beyond the basics to safeguard your business and employee data, unlike newer, unproven alternatives. Plus, you’re backed by a dedicated support team, known for their expertise and responsiveness, giving you confidence that your payroll is in the best hands.

How much will it cost me to run payroll with Powerpay?

The cost of processing payroll with Powerpay will depend on how often you pay your employees, the number of employees you pay, and any additional features that you need to help simplify your processes. The cost structure for Powerpay includes a per-run processing fee and per-payment fees for the employees you pay. A Powerpay Account Executive will work with you to find the most cost-effective solution for your payroll needs, no matter the size of your payroll.

How can Powerpay simplify payroll processing for my business?

Powerpay takes the complexity out of payroll processing, saving you time and reducing errors. With automated tax calculations, accurate withholdings, and built-in compliance safeguards, you can run payroll with confidence – no manual number-crunching required. Our intuitive platform makes it easy to manage payroll from anywhere, while employees can easily access their pay statements and tax documents. And if you ever need help, our support team is here for you, ensuring a smooth and stress-free experience every step of the way.

Are there any risks to doing payroll manually?

Even though doing your payroll manually seems “free,” it is time-consuming and mistakes can be costly:

  • Penalties and interest for late tax remittances (can be 10%+ of the unpaid amount)
  • Time lost calculating payroll instead of running your business
  • Correcting payroll errors (over/underpayments, tax adjustments)
  • Employee frustration from delayed payments or incorrect deductions

That last point can’t be overlooked. Payroll mistakes can damage employee trust and ultimately cost you the reputation of your business. Using payroll software saves time, reduces compliance risk, and improves accuracy, making it a cost-effective choice for most small businesses.

What payroll reporting requirements apply to my business?

If you’re operating a business in Canada, your payroll reporting requirements will include many, if not all, of the following:

  • Payroll remittances: Submit CPP/QPP, EI/QPIP, and income tax deductions on time (monthly, quarterly, or accelerated based on business size).
  • Year-end tax forms and summaries: Provide employees with year-end forms (T4s/RLs) and file them by the end of February each year.
  • Records of employment (ROE): Issue an ROE when an employee leaves or has an interruption of earnings.
  • Workers’ compensation reporting: Submit payroll data to the provincial workers’ compensation board (e.g., WSIB in Ontario).
  • Provincial employer health tax (EHT): If applicable, report payroll amounts and pay any required tax.
  • Accurate recordkeeping: Keep payroll records for at least six years in case of audits.
